Google finishes September 2026 spam update after 14 days

On 8 October 2026, Google marked its September 2026 spam update as complete. According to Search Engine Journal, the rollout began on 24 September, applied globally and in all languages, and took 13 days and 16 hours, close to the two weeks Google had allowed. The Google Search Status Dashboard lists it alongside a shorter August 2026 spam update that began on 18 August.

What changes

Spam updates improve Google’s automated spam detection. Google did not say what this one targeted. Its spam policies cover practices such as scaled content made mainly to rank, expired domain abuse, third-party content hosted to exploit a site’s ranking signals, cloaking and link spam. Sites that lost visibility because of a spam update can recover, but Google’s guidance is that this can take months after the problem is fixed and its systems see the change. This was not a core update, and no October 2026 update appears on the dashboard as of 22 October.

What it means for founders

This applies to any business that relies on Google traffic, in India, the UAE or elsewhere. If your site uses bulk AI-written pages, bought links, or third-party content hosted to borrow your domain’s standing, a drop between 24 September and 8 October deserves a close look. If you do none of those things, a dip in that window may have other causes: seasonality, tracking changes, competitors or ordinary ranking movement. Third-party trackers reported volatility from 26 September, which Google has not tied to the update.

What to do now

  • Compare Search Console clicks and impressions for the two weeks before 24 September with the period after 8 October, by page and by country.
  • Treat only drops that last several days and show in both clicks and impressions as possibly linked to the update.
  • Audit pages produced at scale and any sponsored or partner sections against Google’s spam policies, and fix the content rather than chasing rankings.
  • Check for manual actions in Search Console, which are separate from algorithmic updates.
