Global startup funding hits $159bn in Q3 as AI takes 64%

On 5 October 2026, Crunchbase News reported that startups worldwide raised $159 billion in the third quarter of 2026, across close to 6,000 companies. That was down 25% from $212 billion in the second quarter but up 53% on the $104 billion raised a year earlier. It was the weakest quarter of 2026 so far, yet still above every earlier quarter back to the second quarter of 2022.

What changes

Money is gathering in fewer hands. AI companies took $102 billion, or 64% of the total. A record 27 companies raised rounds of $1 billion or more, together taking about a third of all venture money. Databricks and Safe Superintelligence raised $5 billion each. US companies raised $91 billion, about 57% of the global figure, and the San Francisco Bay Area alone accounted for 24%.

Lower down, the picture is steadier. Late-stage funding was $105 billion. Early-stage funding reached $40.6 billion, up 25% on a year earlier. Seed funding was $13 billion, though about 20% of that came in seed rounds of $100 million or more. Over the first nine months of 2026, $679 billion has been invested, the highest for that period of any year in Crunchbase’s data.

What it means for founders

The totals make raising look easier than it is. Take out the billion-dollar rounds and about two-thirds of the money is left for everyone else, and that share still leans heavily towards AI and the US. Founders outside AI, or outside the US, are competing for a smaller pool. The rise in early-stage funding is the more useful signal for most: investors are still writing first cheques, but they want a clear reason why the company wins. The 25% fall from the second quarter also shows how quickly sentiment can turn.

What to do now

  • If AI is part of your product, show what it changes for customers in numbers, not labels.
  • Outside the US, line up local and regional investors alongside any approach to US funds.
  • Plan for 18 to 24 months of runway rather than counting on a quick next round.
  • Get your metrics and financial model in order before conversations start; an outside strategy review can help test the story.
